Unusual sight- SPD #62 Fri, 1 Aug 2008 10:12:02 -0800gb_packards posted a photo:

While at the boathouse today I heard some strange sounds coming from the river and caught this unusual group heading south. I believe this is a dredge but the propulsion is from a paddlewheeler called the Laura J, a very unusual sight on the river today. ( I think the gal in the lower right corner is a mother of one of the HS rowers.)

The Delta Queen (above) was back in Marietta, Ohio on July 31, 2008. See
gb packards pictures, which are very good. Here is the schedule for the Queen's visits to Marietta for the balance of 2008 and, perhaps, forever.
Monday - Aug 4 (8 a.m. - 1 p.m.)
Thurs. - Sept. 11 (8 a.m. - 5 p.m.)
Monday - Sept 15 (8 a.m. - 1 p.m.)
Thurs. - Oct 2 (8 a.m. - 5 p.m.)
Monday - Oct. 6 (8 a.m. - 1 p.m.)
Vicki Webster, an active leader in the "Save The Delta Queen" campaign, feels optimistic about the future of the Queen. According
to Webster, U.S. Senator, George Voinovich - R - Ohio, has recently announced his support for an exemption for the Delta Queen and will introduce exemption legislation in September right after the August recess. Much is happening "behind the scenes" and let's hope the Queen will sail for a long time !!

Originally the Delta Queen and sister Delta King were built in Sacramento California with parts shipped from Scotland in 1926. The Delta Queen cruises the Mississippi River and its tributaries on a regular schedule, with cruises ranging from New Orleans to Memphis to St. Louis to St. Paul to Cincinnati to Pittsburgh, with stops in between. Her future is currently uncertain, but she is scheduled to continue to operate through November 2008.

Old High School Rediscovered- Tuesday Trip Tue, 29 Jul 2008 08:54:57 -0800gb_packards posted a photo:

I walked around the old Marietta High School and was pleased to discover how clean and attractive she still is. The heavy wooden doors and windows have been replaced but it's appearance wasnt changed all that much and the remodeling was done in good taste. The school itself was built in 1926. The gymnasium was completed and dedicated in 1929. Since 1967 it has been the junior high, now called the Marietta Middle School.
From left to right: This is the front of the building facing north. The parking lot, gymnasium and track are in the rear and is used as the main entrance.
This Tiger is painted in the center of the gymnasium's basketball court. It still looks as good as it did when I attended here in the late 1960s.
The gymnasium is startlingly beautiful and is obviously well kept. The doors were open and I took a memorable walk inside and got a few shots before exiting.

The Rock greets those that use the north entrance to Marietta High School in Marietta Ohio. If you could strip the paint from it, layer by layer, it would reveal a wonderful history of each class that has represented itself with art work that has been applied since 1967. The Rock is a monument to the thousands of students and faculty who attended here.

Former Children's Home- Marietta Ohio Sun, 27 Jul 2008 21:46:47 -0800gb_packards posted a photo:

This is two connecting buildings that were part of a large complex that made up the Washington County Children's Home. I had many friends, most who I met in grade school through high school, who lived and worked here.
This Children's Home was Ohio's first, founded in 1867 by Catherine Fay Ewing and the first in the nation to be funded with tax dollars. At the time, the 100 acre farm was purchased for $18 thousand by the Washington County Commissioners. It became the means for establishing Children?s Homes all around Ohio and the Ohio Children?s Home Law became the model that was eventually enacted throughout the United States.
